2023 Slate of Candidates
 
President: Heather O'Hara
Heather O’Hara, a Maryland native, has been researching her family’s history for over twenty years focusing on Maryland, Virginia, and Pennsylvania as well as Northern Ireland, Germany, and Ukraine. She currently serves as the Vice President of the Maryland Genealogical Society and is responsible for planning our events and webinars. Heather is a past Vice President of the Anne Arundel Genealogical Society where she sourced and booked monthly speakers, and managed that portion of the society’s monthly meetings.  She has taken several courses with both NGS and NIGS and has undertaken extensive research at both the Maryland State Archives and the Library of Virginia. Heather has attended numerous conferences and seminars on the national, regional, and local levels. In addition to MGS, Heather is also a member of DAR, NGS, The Virginia Genealogical Society, the genealogical/historical societies of Anne Arundel, Baltimore, Harford, and Stafford (VA) Counties, and the Jewish Genealogy Society of Maryland.
 
Vice President: Janelle Bartlett Mummey
Janelle Bartlett Mummey became interested in genealogy many years ago after inheriting some of her paternal grandfather’s research.   She joined  the Maryland Genealogical Society in 2014 and later also several local societies. She was elected as an at-large member of the board in 2018 and, until recently, managed the MGS Facebook page. Janelle moved to the area in 1998 after college to do legislative work on Capitol Hill and has since held several different positions, in and out of legislative work, around Maryland and DC.  Janelle holds a BA from Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa; an MPA from the University of Baltimore; and most recently a Master’s of Science degree in Law from the University of Maryland Baltimore, Maryland.  Originally from St. Louis, Missouri, she now lives in Pasadena, Maryland with her husband where she enjoys researching her family history, watching sports, reading, and spoiling her rescue beagles.
 
Treasurer: Allender Sybert
Allender Sybert has been active in genealogical research and in the Maryland Genealogical Society for many years. He has served as a member of the By-Laws, Programs, Publications and Website committees, and is Book Review Editor of the Maryland Genealogical Society Journal. He was the Society’s President from 2011 to 2013. Currently he is the Treasurer and Registrar. He is a Fellow of the Maryland Genealogical Society. 
 
Recording Secretary: Ellen Ward
Ellen Ward lived most of her life in Baltimore County, Maryland, and is a graduate of the College of Notre Dame of Maryland with a degree in Computer Information Systems. She retired from the Baltimore County Public Library where she worked for almost 30 years. Ellen has been working on her personal family history for about 20 years. She completed ProGen, a nineteen-month study group focusing on the book Professional Genealogy. She previously was Recording Secretary for the Maryland Genealogical Society for several years, is a Board member-at-Large, and is currently editor of MGS News, the society’s digital newsletter. She is also a member of the National Genealogical Society as well as local genealogical groups. Ellen attends national and local genealogy conferences and workshops and enjoys keeping up with the latest genealogy news by listening to podcasts, watching webinars, and reading blogs, magazines, and books.
